To My Monkeys

I was supposed to bring you home today.

To the world you knew

Only through your mother’s eyes.

To a home that was yours

And shall forever be.

To a life that held all the wonders

You heard of through my voice.

To laughter that was yours

And to the tears of learning

That would have made you stronger.

To my arms as they envisioned

Holding and cuddling you close.

I was supposed to bring you home today.

Imagining ways to merge

My childhood to yours

As you laughed and learnt

Familiar tunes and sang the same songs.

Of seeing you take your first steps

Or even reject your greens

As I struggled to sleep at night

Unable to decide

Whether it was the joy of having you

Or the utter lack of sleep

That made my heart expand and burst

With every passing moment.

I was supposed to bring you home today, girls.

I was supposed to carry you in my arms

To a world of joy I had imagined

And created as you

Wrecked through the rules

And wrote your own.

I was supposed to bring you home today.
